How to Publish a Blog Post
Publishing makes your blog post visible to the public with a unique URL. This guide covers publishing, unpublishing, and managing post visibility.
Prerequisites
Before you begin:
- You must be signed in to your account
- You must be the post author or a team owner
- The post must exist as a draft
Publishing a Post
Step 1: Navigate to Your Post
From the sidebar, click Blog and locate your draft post in the list.
Step 2: Open the Post
Click on the post card or the edit button to open the post editor.
Step 3: Publish
Click the Publish button (or Save & Publish if creating a new post).
Step 4: Confirm Publication
The post is now published:
- Status changes from "Draft" to "Published"
- A public URL is generated
- SEO metadata becomes active
- The post appears on your public profile
Expected Result
After publishing:
| Change | Description |
|---|---|
| Status | Changes to "Published" |
| Public URL | Generated and active |
| Profile | Post appears in your blog section |
| SEO | Meta tags and structured data active |
| Comments | Enabled if configured |
Finding Your Public URL
The public URL follows this format:
- Single-user mode:
yourdomain.com/blog/{public-slug} - Platform mode:
doerpath.com/{username}/{slug}
The public slug is generated from your post title with a timestamp suffix (e.g., my-first-post-1704067200000).
You can find the public URL:
- In the post editor after publishing
- On the post card in your blog list
- On your public profile
Unpublishing a Post
To remove a post from public view without deleting it:
Step 1: Open the Published Post
Navigate to your blog and open the published post.
Step 2: Unpublish
Click the Unpublish button in the post editor.
Step 3: Confirm
The post returns to draft status:
- Public URL becomes inactive
- Removed from your public profile
- Content preserved for future editing
- Comments remain but are no longer visible
Publishing vs Archiving
| Action | Result |
|---|---|
| Publish | Makes post publicly visible |
| Unpublish | Returns to draft, URL inactive |
| Archive | Hides from dashboard views, preserves data |
Use Unpublish to temporarily remove content. Use Archive for posts you're done with.
SEO Considerations
Before publishing, optimize for search:
Meta Title
Set a custom meta title or let it default to your post title. Keep it under 60 characters for best display in search results.
Meta Description
Write a compelling description that appears in search results. Keep it under 160 characters.
Excerpt
The excerpt appears in social sharing previews. Make it engaging and informative.
Example
Title: Getting Started with n8n Automation
Meta Title: n8n Automation Tutorial - Step by Step Guide
Meta Description: Learn how to build your first n8n workflow with this comprehensive beginner's guide. Includes examples and best practices.
Excerpt: A beginner-friendly guide to n8n automation workflows with practical examples.
Comment Settings Before Publishing
Review comment settings before publishing:
| Setting | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Enable Comments | Turn on for engagement |
| Visibility | Public for community discussion |
| Require Approval | Enable to moderate before display |
You can change these settings after publishing, but consider your moderation capacity.
Troubleshooting
"Post is already published" error
The post is already live. Use Unpublish first if you want to republish.
"You do not have permission to publish" error
Only the post author or team owners can publish. Contact your team owner for assistance.
Public URL not working
Ensure the post status shows "Published". If unpublished, the URL becomes inactive.
Post not appearing on profile
Published posts should appear immediately. Check:
- Post status is "Published" (not "Draft")
- The
isPublicflag is true - You're viewing the correct profile URL
Best Practices
- Preview before publishing - Review your content for errors
- Set SEO fields - Optimize title and description
- Configure comments - Decide on moderation settings
- Check formatting - Ensure Markdown renders correctly
- Test the URL - Visit the public URL after publishing
Next Steps
After publishing:
- Share your public URL on social media
- Manage comments as they arrive
- Monitor your post's engagement
