How to Link Tasks to Clients
Tasks can be assigned directly to clients, independent of projects. This is useful for quick requests, ongoing work, or tasks that don't fit into a specific project. This guide shows you how to link tasks to clients.
Prerequisites
Before you begin:
- You must be signed in to your account
- You must have at least one client created
- You need permission to create or edit tasks
Method 1: Assign Client When Creating a Task
Step 1: Open Task Creation
From the sidebar, click Tasks, then click New Task or use the quick-add button.
Step 2: Fill Task Details
Enter the task title and any other details.
Step 3: Select Client
In the task form, use the Client dropdown to select which client this task belongs to.
Step 4: Create Task
Click Create to save the task. The task is now linked to the selected client.
Method 2: Assign Client to Existing Task
Step 1: Open Task
From the Tasks page, click on the task you want to link to a client.
Step 2: Edit Task
Open the task's edit mode or detail view.
Step 3: Select Client
Use the Client dropdown to select the client.
Step 4: Save
Save the task. It's now linked to the selected client.
Method 3: Use Client Filter to View Tasks
Step 1: Navigate to Tasks
From the sidebar, click Tasks to view your task board.
Step 2: Open Filters
Click the filter icon or Filters button.
Step 3: Filter by Client
Select a client from the Client filter dropdown.
Step 4: View Filtered Tasks
Only tasks assigned to the selected client are shown. This helps you focus on work for a specific client.
Expected Result
After linking a task to a client:
- The task shows the client association in its details
- The task appears when filtering by that client
- Client-related reporting includes this task
Client vs Project Assignment
Tasks can be linked to both a client and a project, or just one:
| Scenario | When to Use |
|---|---|
| Client only | Quick requests, ad-hoc work not tied to a project |
| Project only | Internal projects, work without external clients |
| Both client and project | Client work organized into projects |
| Neither | Personal tasks, internal team work |
Removing Client Assignment
To remove a task's client assignment:
- Open the task for editing
- Clear the Client selection (select "No Client" or clear the field)
- Save the task
The task remains but is no longer associated with any client.
Bulk Operations
To assign multiple tasks to a client at once:
- Consider creating tasks from a project that's already linked to the client
- Tasks created within a client-linked project can inherit the client association
Best Practices
- Be consistent - Decide whether to use client-level or project-level organization and stick to it
- Use filters - Filter by client when focusing on specific client work
- Review assignments - Periodically check that tasks are assigned to the correct clients
- Link projects too - If tasks relate to ongoing projects, link both the task and project to the client
Troubleshooting
Client dropdown is empty
You don't have any clients yet:
Can't see client option in task form
- Verify you're on a paid plan (clients require Plus or higher)
- Refresh the page and try again
Filter not showing expected tasks
- Check that tasks are actually assigned to the client
- Verify you're viewing the correct team
- Clear other filters that may be hiding tasks
Next Steps
After linking tasks to clients:
